Camp L on Nimpkish Lake

My sister married Ken Knutson in 1951; he was head loader on "Side 1" a steam powered machine that reloaded logs out of Nimpkish Lake to be transferred by rail car, then watered at Englewood, (Beach Camp). My mother moved to Alert Bay along with me in 1953 in order to be near my Sister who had her first child. My summers, holidays, and (every opprotunity) I got on the water taxi to Englewood, then to Camp L via "Speeder" on the railroad; the only access at that time. The only kid in camp, I could work with the men on the boom, the section gang on the railroad, or help Bill Miller split firewood for the Bunkhouses. Mostly my time was spent fishing for trout with one of the night shift guys during the day, and the day shift guys after supper. A special treat was a hike to Thiemer lake to camp out on the small island with my Brother-in-law Ken and brother Ed. I loved the Nimpkish Valley. As a teenager I had a small outboard boat. David Landsdowne, Danny Peterson, and Paul Shields and I would camp on the island below the canyon and hike up the Nimpkish. One time Reggie Scow and hiked to Thiemer Lake for an over nighter. I remember (in Alert Bay) looking out the windows of the High School towards the mouth of the Nimpkish wistfully, wishing I was there.
